Neighborhood Activities

Section 3 has an active social life as a community. The  highlight of the year is the “Party in the Park” around our Gazebo Park in September.  We have rides and games for children, a delightful catered dinner for everyone, music, a cake walk and of course, the Good Humor truck comes to hand out free ice cream to everyone at the party!

In October we always have a Halloween Parade and Pizza Party before all the kids go out trick or treating.  In November, we have a brunch for all our Senior Citizens. Every November we collect warm clothing and blankets for the homeless just before Thanksgiving and donate carloads of gently used clothing and shoes for all ages to a nonprofit organization serving the homeless in Washington, D.C.—Martha’s Table.  In December, we hold an annual Holiday Party, most recently with a puppet show featuring Bob Brown Puppets for neighborhood children.

In March of 2010, we began a new tradition, the “Everybody’s Irish” party for adults and children---adult beverages and green food and lots of fun!  In March or April every year the Easter Bunny  visits us and we have an Easter egg hunt for children 6 and under and then a luncheon outside for all the families attending the event with all their children. In May, if we have enough homes to tour, we have a Section 3 house and/or garden tour with the price of admission gently used towels and travel soaps and lotions which we donate to a local shelter for the homeless for their showers. In June we have an annual Wine Tasting Tour in which everyone participating pays the cost of the wine, brings their own glasses, and walks between three homes, one serving three whites, one serving three reds and one serving some other interesting type of wine. All the wines served are under $15 a bottle so that you could choose to purchase the wines for entertaining at home.  In July we have a “Welcome New Neighbors” barbeque for everyone to give new neighbors a chance to meet everyone. Catered by  Rocklands Barbeque, the event is always well attended…not only to meet the new neighbors, but also because the food is so tasty!

We’re open to other ideas for activities---we have a number of young mother’s groups who meet regularly. There is a yahoo group for young mothers and the Village Manager will help connect you to those groups.
